Welcome to our first newsletter of 2021. Happy New Year everyone. It seems that 2021 has started out just as hectic as 2020 ended, but all of us at Hudson are excited with the new energy the year has brought.

We have welcomed a new staff member this month, Melissa Grimshaw. Melissa is our new Associate Adviser and will assist our Senior Advisers in all facets of their financial plans. Mel brings a wealth of experience with her to the team, and is a skilful strategy writer. Read Mel's full bio here.

We’d also like to re-introduce Matt Kerr and try to make up for the fact that we left him off the website for about 3 weeks! Matt has worked with Hudson for over 10 years and now works in collaboration with us from his coastal pad in Caloundra. The unexpected ‘green’ lining of Covid-19 has given us the opportunity to think about our commitments to environmental and social factors. Climate change and responsible investing are more and more becoming a global focus and with President Joe Biden recommitting to the Paris Agreement, public awareness and commitment to change is inevitable. It’s estimated the global emission impact of COVID 19 will be -5.5%, the largest annual reduction since records began. The big four banks are all pledging to review their approach to funding oil and gas in response to ongoing pressure from climate groups and have committed to deadlines of 2030 and 2035 (for NAB) for transition. Suncorp and QBE have indicated that they will not insure or finance new coal projects from 2030. In fact the Indian conglomerate Adani Group is relying entirely on its own resources to fund the controversial Carmichael project in QLD. Hudson has an approved ethical Australian fund that has been doing really well, and in light of the changing corporate stand on renewable energy and sustainable investments, we feel that these funds have not only an environmental and social impact but also offer potential for financial impact. There are some important changes happening in the insurance industry that will potentially affect new income protection policies from October. More detailed information will be available next month but it's important to note that it is likely that all new income protection policies taken out after October will be subject to review and reassessment by the insurance companies every few years, policies started prior to this date will not have to be reviewed or reassessed. It's important that anyone considering income protection should speak with us well before October comes around.

With January nearly behind us, 2021 is definitely in full swing. Let’s make it one to remember, for all the right reasons.
