Welcome to The Hudson Report ,

Some cute news to begin with this month, announcing the winner of our Easter Colouring Competition. Introducing Ella from Western Australia, age 8, our 2021 Easter Colouring Competition winner. Tiggy, aged 3, was our runner up in Melbourne. Well done Ella and Tiggy! Thank you to everyone who spent the time colouring and sending in some beautiful artwork. Our meeting room has never looked so colourful!

IMPORTANT: Any client of Hudson that has investments in the Pengana International Fund, the Pengana International Ethical Fund, or the Pengana International Ethical Opportunity Fund has been contacted by now, as there is a consideration to diversify out of these funds under direction from our research house, Lonsec. If you are a client of ours and hold investments in these funds outside of Hudson it's important for you to consider alternatives with your external provider.

Extract from Lonsec Directive:

Lonsec has today assigned a ’Redeem’ rating to the Fund following the departure of CIO/Portfolio Manager Jordan Cvetanovski and Deputy Portfolio Manager Steven Glass on 24 March 2021. Lonsec believes their departure represents a material loss of investment experience and research breadth for the management of the Fund. Cvetanovski’s leadership was also considered particularly important given he was a key architect of the strategy. The remaining investment team are not considered adequately resourced or experienced to manage the strategy.

There are many research houses out there; Morningstar and Lonsec are among the ones Hudson use, that analyse, compare and rate funds. These research houses also provide a fundamental role in building our investment capabilities and help our advisers manage and recommend optimal portfolios. From time to time these research houses will recommend that a particular fund is redeemed. This is not taken lightly by Lonsec and does not occur often, but it can as we saw last week. We also do not take this lightly and have made moves to contact those that are affected to discuss alternatives.

Here at Hudson, we have always held our own financial Services License, which enables us to recommend funds that we feel present not only value for money, but offer quality portfolio managers, good historic returns and innovative benefits for all of our clients whether you are accumulating wealth or in retirement. Retail funds can offer options with exposure to niche markets with a history of higher than market returns and advisers can provide potentially life-changing value with their knowledge and support, backed by our research houses and understanding of current legislation.

Any of our members who have Michal Park as their adviser will be familiar with her Two Minute Tuesdays by now. If you haven’t had the pleasure of receiving these quick updates, you can catch up here. One of Michal’s Two Minute Tuesdays was reminding clients to not just openly assume industry funds are doing the right thing by you without checking exactly what fees you are paying and what performance returns you are generating. It is important to check your industry funds as much as it is to check your retail funds. It’s quite a passionate topic for our advisers as they believe in what they do and the value that they add for our clients, and while industry funds are certainly an excellent option for some, they are usually not as low cost as they would have you believe. As highlighted above, Research houses are extremely helpful in helping us to manage our clients’ portfolios and adding value where industry funds cannot.

It was pleasing to see that Colonial First State, our platform of choice, won the 2020 innovative award (Chant West), for the best retirement fund option. There are many reasons we choose to predominantly use Colonial First State as our platform of choice and their innovation is just one of them.
