Welcome to The Hudson Report

Hudson report written and edited by Juanita Wrenn and Katie Gilmour

Fun Fact for this month: Our Senior Adviser Michal Park is an artist in her own right. Click here to see a piece of her amazing art!

August is my Birthday month and I often get quite reflective around my Birthday, thinking back on the year, what I was doing this time last year and everything in between.

As I touched on in July’s report (click here to see the past Hudson Reports), we have now entered a new era in the industry and it got me thinking back to when I started at Hudson in 2000. I started looking through old seminar workshop notes and I found the whole investment series from 2002; Your Investing Lifetime with the Applebys. Like an old movie, I hope to digitally reprint these seminar notes on our website because it really was interesting to see what we were discussing 20 years ago. I will let everyone know when old material is live on our website again. Our business has had to evolve over the last few years in line with changing regulations and legislation. It is a very different industry to where we started 30 years ago but we are proud that Hudson as our clients know us has not changed much at all. The biggest change that our clients will notice is extra compliance paperwork for you to sign when you are receiving your advice from us. One way in which we are trying to make this easier for you is to send this paperwork via Docusign.

I will probably keep talking Docusign for the next few months as it really is one of my favourite things that we have introduced to Hudson this year. It takes away the necessity to print and sign documents and then having to scan them back. If you have any questions when attempting Docusign you can call Mel or Katie any time and they can work through it with you. Post is always an option so if you still prefer to receive your documents in the mail just let us know and it can be arranged.

After reading Kris’ article last month on Industry Funds, I thought I would also reflect and express my own thoughts on Industry Funds. Being self-licensed we have the ability to put industry funds on our approved product list. This approved product list is discussed by the advisers each month in our investment committee meetings. We have actively discussed certain industry funds as an option in these meetings, but so far we have always come away voting that retail funds such as Colonial suit our client base better than industry funds namely because of the quality and quantity of their options across all sectors.

In my terms, industry funds are a little like fast food; no one really hates them, no one really loves them and the funds are generally multi-asset classed (a bit like a happy meal), so across shares property etc, they are generally “okay”. Using an adviser does mean that you pay a fee for that service, but it also brings so many benefits … a catered portfolio for you (not the general masses), the ability to invest in specialist sectors and an adviser that is staying ahead of changing legislation and strategies. Investing with an adviser is like dining at a full-service restaurant, with lots of individual options and better service! McDonald's advertise on television, a restaurant with three Michelin stars doesn’t have to. Click on Kris’ article from last month here.

This month, we’d like to introduce you to Ty Ma. Ty is the Manging Director of Urban Properties and has a long history dealing with Commercial Property.

Ty moved into the offices next door to us here at Hudson 6 months ago and we thought some of our clients may find a chat with Ty about Commercial Property in Brisbane very useful.

Brisbane land opportunities. We currently have 3 land opportunities available through our property partners. We have outlined Newport and Deception Bay in previous emails. This month we also have access to land in Pelican Waters on the Sunshine Coast.

With these land releases if you are interested at all its important to register your interest. You are not committed at this point. This registration only means that you will get notified 1 week before land release happens and at this time a price list and lot size will be sent to you and if you are still interested you and James (Roonsleigh) can work out which lot is best for design and budget. Even at this stage you then have to choose 3 preferences and submit before you are committed to anything. So please contact James to register your interest if you are interested at all. Leave your contact details here and James will be in touch.

Have a good September everyone, spring is just around the corner and it will be Christmas before we know it.

Estate Planning: 4 Things You MUST Consider

This article is written by Kris Wrenn – Senior Adviser

I’ve often said to my clients that Insurance is a very unique product, in that you pay good money for it, but hope you will never use it! Estate planning expenses, i.e. paying for a Will, is a similar premise, in that you yourself will never directly benefit from it.

How Does Covid Affect Your Insurance Policies

This is an article by Aaron Alston – Financial Adviser

This was a question I was recently asked by a Hudson member and is a hot topic of discussion with misinformation being circulated around social media that, "Life insurers won’t cover existing policies if you either suffer, die or receive a Covid vaccination."
